What does it mean to question your thoughts?

How often do you hear yourself say you “should” do something or you “need to” do something or you “have to” do something?

We only say these things when we’re not doing those things. I want to challenge you to really question these things you “should”, “need to”, or “have to” do.

When you hear yourself say, “I should go for a walk.” Is it true that you should go for a walk? Can you be 100% sure that you should go for a walk? Is it true that you shouldn’t go for a walk? Is there a reason it might be true you should NOT go for a walk?

An interesting thing that happens when we question our “shoulds”, “need to’s”, and “have to’s” is we find out what we really WANT to do.

For me it looks like this: I should go on a walk. Is that true? Yes. It’s good for my health. Can I be 100% sure it’s true? No. Maybe there’s something else more important to do right now. Is it true I shouldn’t go for a walk? Maybe. Is there a reason it might be true I should NOT go for a walk? Well, I’m really tired because I’ve been up since 5am, maybe it would be better for me to lay down instead.

Now what? Well, I really do WANT to go for a walk, and it usually gives me more energy than taking a nap.

It feels much better to do something because you WANT to than you “should”. Sometimes this ends up that I realize I really DON’T want to do what I think I should. And after I’ve questioned it, I realize that I like my reason for NOT doing it.

When we’re not paying attention, we will believe thoughts just because they came into our minds. But when we pay attention, we can question what is coming into our minds, and we can really examine what is true. Try it out and let me know how it helps you.
