A Question To Ask When Things Don't Go As Expected

The other night my husband and my 6 year old son had a conversation that went like this:

Steve: Would you like another bun after you finish your soup?

Xander: Yes

Steve: Okay, I’ll defrost it for you.

A couple of minutes later…

Xander: Okay, I’m done my soup.

Steve walks over with a warmed bun: Would you like me to put butter on it for you?

Xander: Butter? I want frosting!

Steve very confused: Frosting? We don’t put frosting on our bread.

Xander a little louder and a little more adamant: You said you’d put frosting on it!

Steve now realizing that Xander didn’t understand de-frosting, and chuckling a little: You misunderstood me. I said DE-frosting, not frosting.

Xander, who loves to laugh, so wants in on the fun, but also doesn’t want to miss out on his frosting, half-laughing, half-crying, definitely screaming: YOU DIDN’T SAY ‘DE’!!!

Poor Xander was pretty upset that he didn’t get his frosting. But in the end, he did enjoy his bun with butter.

Have you ever felt this way in life? You’re expecting one thing, only to find out you’re actually getting something else?

It could be as simple as, you spend an hour making dinner for your family, and 3 out of the 5 people complain. Or you invite someone for a girls’ night out, and they don’t reciprocate the invitation.

Or it could be something more encompassing such as you do all of the “right” things, but you still don’t feel happy. You’re excited to be a mom, but after you have 1 child, you find out you can’t have anymore, or that your baby is sick.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the scripture in Isaiah 55:8-9:

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Let’s be honest, Xander had a pretty great idea. But he wasn’t able to see the whole picture. Frosting on buns might be delicious, and over time it would lead to tummy aches and cavities.

If some of your plans or thoughts aren’t going the way you imagined, ask yourself, “Is it possible, that God’s plan is better than mine?”

Don’t just jump to ‘yes’. Really sit with it. Could there be a higher purpose to what’s going on in your life?

This is one of those questions I like to just take time to ponder on, sometimes for a long time.
